As someone who’s constantly on the lookout for fun ways to stay active, I’ve tried a ton of VR fitness games. But I wanted to put one of the most popular titles to the test: Beat Saber.
Over the past week, I played Beat Saber every day to put it to the test. In this post, I’ll break down:
✔ My fitness data
✔ What worked (and what didn’t)
✔ Whether Beat Saber is a good fit for your VR fitness routine
Let’s jump in—light sabers first.
🎮 What is Beat Saber?
If you’re new to VR fitness, Beat Saber is a rhythm-based game where you slash color-coded blocks flying at you to the beat of the music. Think Dance Dance Revolution meets Jedi training. You can play on Meta Quest, SteamVR, or PlayStation VR, and there are tons of songs to choose from—everything from EDM to rock to pop. You move your arms a lot, and depending on the song’s difficulty, your heart rate can spike fast.
📊 My Beat Saber Workout Stats (7-Day Breakdown)
Here’s what my average daily workout looked like over the week:
| Metric | Result |
| Average Time Per Session | 24.5 minutes |
| Active Calories Burned | 153.5 cal |
| Total Calories Burned | 200.5 cal |
| Average Heart Rate | 136.75 bpm |
| Heart Rate Range | 84-184 bpm |
💡 Note: I used an Apple smartwatch to track these stats while playing on Hard/Expert difficulty levels.
✅ What I Loved About Using Beat Saber for Workouts
1. 🎵 It’s Seriously Fun
The music makes all the difference. I was so caught up in slashing blocks to my favorite songs that I completely forgot I was working out. As someone who often struggles with workout motivation, this was a game-changer.
2. 🕒 Built-In Breaks
The typical song is around 3-4 minutes long, which gave me natural breaks between tracks. I found this helpful for recovery and letting me push harder during the next round.
3. ❤️ Moderate, Sustainable Intensity
With an average heart rate of 136 bpm, Beat Saber gave me a moderate cardio workout. I wasn’t completely drained afterward, which made it easier to stay consistent over the week.
⚠️ Things to Know Before Using Beat Saber as Your Main Workout
1. 🎮 Intensity Depends on Skill Level
I’ve played Beat Saber for a while, so I stuck to Hard and Expert songs, which definitely got my heart rate up. But my partner, who’s newer to the game, played on Normal and barely broke a sweat. Ideally, you will need to build up to higher difficulty levels for it to really effective as a workout.
2. 🏃 Not the Best for Endurance
Short 3–4 minute songs are great for pacing, but they don’t build the same endurance or sustained intensity as some other VR workouts like Supernatural or FitXR, which keep you moving for 20+ minutes straight.
3. 🦵 Limited Full-Body Engagement
Beat Saber is mostly an upper-body workout. My arms were definitely moving, but my core and lower body didn’t get much action. There’s some ducking and dodging, but it’s not consistent enough for leg or core gains.
🧠 So, Is Beat Saber a Good Workout?
✔ Yes—for light to moderate cardio, especially if you’re at a higher difficulty level and stay engaged with full-body movement.
✔ No—if you’re looking for strength training, endurance work, or lower-body engagement, you may want to mix in another VR game. But honestly? If you’re struggling with motivation, Beat Saber is one of the most accessible and enjoyable ways to start moving more. And that’s a win in my book.

🏁 Final Thoughts
Beat Saber won’t replace your strength training, but it absolutely has a place in a well-rounded fitness routine. If you’re looking for a way to stay active, reduce workout dread, or just get moving while having a blast, this is one of the best VR games out there.
I’ll definitely keep Beat Saber in my rotation, especially on days when I need something fun and low-pressure.
